The Department of Health celebrated World No Tobacco Day (May 31) by conferring the DOH Red Orchid Awards to government offices, government hospitals and local government units based on the strength their comprehensive efforts to implement a 100% Tobacco-Free Environment following the World Health Organization MPOWER initiative.
MPOWER is an acronym that denotes the six proven tobacco control policies, namely: Monitor tobacco use and prevention policies; Protect people from tobacco smoke; Offer help to quit tobacco use; Warn against the dangers of tobacco; Enforce bans on tobacco advertising; and Raise taxes on tobacco.
Out of 89 nominees, 34 were declared winners. The nominees were categorized in color codes where Red Orchid awardees garnered high scores and considered as winners; Pink Orchid and White Orchid are first and second runners-up, respectively. Meanwhile, finalists that got below 60 percentage points were given Certificates of Participation.
The Awards ceremony was held at the Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila in Ortigas, Pasig City.
