Is it still summer in the Philippines or is it already the rainy season? Two typhoons come in succession this week and the strong winds and heavy rains are here. Anyway, when it rains in the US and other western nations, it signals Spring. The current monsoon rains in the country may also be timely to observe the first-of-a-kind PHILIPPINE SPRING CLEANING DAY 2011 on May 11.
Yes, you read it right, the country will hold a Spring Cleaning Day, even if we only have two seasons – the dry and the wet. Anyway, for us Filipinos, we usually term it as “General Cleaning.”
Cleaning can save lives – it is a necessary public heath intervention for the country. One life every 20 seconds is lost because of poor sanitation. With cleaning, 20,000 Filipino lives and 1.5 million lives worldwide are saved. According to a study entitled “Economic Impacts of Sanitation in the Philippines”, poor sanitation leads to economic losses totaling US$ 1.4 billion or PhP 77.8 billion per year.
The first Philippine Spring Cleaning Day is an activity to raise awareness and improve the cleaning and sanitation practices of Filipinos. Armed with the battle cry: “I Clean, I Save.”, it is claimed to be the first public and private initiative for cleaning and sanitation.
This campaign is a joint effort of the Department of Health, University of the Philippines-National Institutes of Health, Pediatric Infectious Disease Society of the Philippines (PIDSP) and Reckitt Benckiser - a a world leader in the global household, health and personal care.
Five local government units are also on-board as launch venues that will do actual spring cleaning, namely: Pasay City at Pasay City Sports Complex; Makati City at East Rembo Elementary School; Mandaluyong City at Mandaluyong City Gymnasium; Pasig City at Bagong Ilog Elementary School; and Quezon City at West Triangle Covered Court.
So, what are you waiting for. Join the Spring Cleaning Day and start cleaning at your own home.
